By H.A. and Margret Rey

This is the very first book that the now famous Margret and H. A. Rey wrote for children. It was originally published in France in 1939 with the title RAFFY AND THE NINE MONKEYS. In the French edition, the youngest monkey is named Fifi. While still living in France, the Reys then wrote a book with Fifi as the star of the story. They titled their new book THE ADVENTURES OF FIFI but when they arrived in the United States in the fall of 1940, Margret and Hans revised the manuscript and the title at the suggestion of their American editor, and Fifi became “George”, and the title of the book became the well known CURIOUS GEORGE.

A year after C. GEORGE was published, CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS (a revised and Americanized version of RAFFY AND THE NINE MONKEYS) was published and has been in print ever since. To celebrate the 65th anniversary of this wonderful book, Louise Borden was asked by the Reys’ publisher, Houghton Mifflin, to write an afterword detailing the history of the book.

Enjoy the fun on every page of this playful celebration of imagination and friendship.
